Virus Targeting Gamers!

Virus Targeting Gamers! Image

Here's a general warning for everyone to heed.

In January, Best Buy pulled their $230 Insignia 10.4-inch photo frames off the shelves, because they came pre-loaded with a virus.
Today, (well, yesterday) we learn that the trojan, called Mocmex, is able to block more than 100 types of security and anti-virus software from killing it, and bypasses the Windows firewall to download files from remote locations, spreading them randomly over your hard drive and any portable storage device you plug into your PC -- like, for example, a digital photo frame or USB stick.

So far, it's all pretty normal virus stuff, though a bit nastier than some. But here's the kicker. Apparently this cute little bug Mocmex has a payload geared towards hijacking Game accounts!. Yes siree, this baby wants your WOW accounts, your Guildwars accounts and possibly even your CoX and PotBSaccounts if it can get them. Probably because some of these are worth more than stolen credit cards to the right buyer.

Luckily, not everyone has one of these Digital Frames as they're a bit expensive really, but we all know it's the way of viri to go beyond their original place of residence. It starts on these frames but migrates and procreates as fast as tribbles if given the chance. So this really would be a good time to update that virus scanner, do a full systems scan and change your account passwords anyway.

There should be a severe penalty for making viruses like this, all your effort in 3 years gone thanks trough a virus >_>

That's where you have to be careful. Do you know someone who has one?
Or do you know someone who knows someone who has one? If so, you ought to shudder still. Viruses don't stay on the first inflicted system, but very much like bio-viri spread from host to host through contact. This one entered the world through Digital Frames but is spreading through contact as normal.

I am safe because I am not connected to the internet :)

  Cr3ss3nt on 02/18/08 11:07

  Rainah on 02/18/08 11:17

  robot mind on 02/18/08 12:03

  Grifter0408 on 02/18/08 13:23

I use protection, poor protection, cant afford one. Remember kids....stay abstinence, dont get caught up with a digital frame!

  Chrisworld on 02/18/08 18:28

Serious stuff, i'll make sure i keep my ipod, flash drives and other cards, HD's and file transfers in AIM all to myself. I don't want this crap gettin on me.

  Paramounts_of_Odin on 02/18/08 23:29

Yet another reason to hate best buy... I am not in need of these things you call expensive computer no more codes.

-Yeah, and thanks for the heads up.

  Donovan Wolf on 02/19/08 07:33

So were all going to have to check our digital frames for viruses now after we buy them? Wow that definatly sounds like an inside job. I've heard that crackers (i wont call them hackers as I know a few that are good and very helpfull) have been getting more sophisticated over the last few years. The viruses that they make have been increasingly more destructive. Thanks for the heads up on the digital frame.

  MightySmiter on 02/20/08 11:21

what would you steal from a CoX account? i mean, influence can be easily earned back, and unless they delete your characters it doesnt hurt much. but deleteion doesnt do much for them. WoW i can understand because gear has to be re earned, much harded than influence

  lani on 02/20/08 14:50

A stolen CoX account is typically used to farm Influence / Infamy with for as long as possible. The produce gets resold through seller accounts.
Or sometimes the stolen accounts are used as the seller account, though that's riskier.
In the case of WOW, besides being used for farming, accounts with Level 60+ characters make quite a few bucks. That's mostly "legit" accounts with power-leveled toons though.

  Dystrophy on 02/23/08 14:21

i pity the poor soul that ends up with my personal info....... i couldn't pay someone to steal my identity.
